Space Week Tuff Tray (Part 2)

Travelling Through Space Ice Tray

This week I did two tuff tray set ups based on space to celebrate and learn about the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, it was also part of the #WonderPlayDiscover challenge set up by The Wooden Play Den

This Tuff Tray set up was really easy to do but very effective as Zach loves Ice play! I filled up 4 small buckets (small coloured buckets from Tesco, I think they are 60p each) using some black food colouring with water, a variety of glitters and stars. I also made another lot of shrinkie plastic, I made a rocket, star, moon and planet and put these in the buckets before freezing. This was all the prepping I had to do, all I had to do once frozen was to plop the most onto the tray and fill up the buckets with warm water!

I gave him the buckets of warm water, a spade and a shallow metal bowl (which is great for scooping the water off the tuff tray) and encouraged him to pour the water over the ice blocks not that he needs much encouraging because its his favourite activity HAHA! He spent ages pouring the water into different buckets and pouring them over the ice to melt them and loved revealing the stars and various shrinkies! We also used the Ticket easy hold magnifying glass as its such a perfect addition to these tuff trays, he used it to spot the stars from a distance and the rockets, he loved collecting all the pictures in his buckets and then emptying them out again.

At the end he started splashing the water and soon realised that if he tapped the edge of the tuff tray again and again it would make the water dance and jump, which he really loved! Seeing him learn new things amazes me and just reminds me how much of a sponge they really are when it comes to learning things. With these space tuff trays he learnt so many things, he learnt a few new words, including "Rocket" and "Star" and also learning how to make the water dance on the tray. When we got into the car when his Auntie picked us up from our house to go up to my Mother in laws for tea and asked him what he had been up to, he proudly shouted "Space Week!"

Thank you for reading, please leave any comments to let me know what you think, I'm very new at this so anything would be helpful!
